Double denim

Double denim or denim on denim was once a fashion faux pas thank to Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears who stepped out in matchy-matchy double denim ensemble back in 2001. Those days are long gone as this style shocker is a celebrities and fashionistas favourite.

The fashion designers can’t get enough of double denim trend either as Ralph Lauren has just unveiled its Purple Label and Polo Ralph Lauren Spring 2015 collections features double-denim suits & waistcoats for a stylish triple denim ensemble for men.

Below are a few tips on how to pull off double denim with ease.

• Experiment with different shades of denim i.e. wear a light blue denim shirt with a dark blue or black denim jeans or skirt (refer to Rochelle Humes below on how she styled her denim on denim look).
• Go for denim shades that flatter your body size or shape. Lighter shades of denim will draw attention to your body while darker shades will give you a slimming effect. Therefore wear lighter shades to show off your best assets.
• Don’t be afraid to wear the same shades of denim together for a matchy matchy effect.
• Create a dramatic effect by wearing ripped or distressed denim and don’t shy away from accessorizing your double denim ensemble with bold or animal prints accessories.
• Dress up your double denim out with heels, blazers or jackets or dress it down the choice is yours.

Rochelle Humes was spotted in Manchester wearing a navy blue Topshop moto Joni high waist ripped jeans which she paired with a sky blue denim shirt and a pair of chunky grey boots for a cool casual look. Ashley Greene looked relaxed in dark blue denim skinny jeans teamed with a loose white T-shirt and a light blue cropped denim jacket, beige taupe ankle boots, several long pendant necklaces and a brown Chanel bag as she strolled with her husband. Cressida Bonas was spotted in Central London wearing a light blue Maison Scotch multi tone patchwork chambray denim shirt with an indigo pair of denim jeans, a handbag from Austique boutique and a pair of classic chunky black Doc Martin boots for a shopping outfit. Phoebe Hooke wore a light blue shirt tucked into darker blue jeans with white Birkenstocks, large sunglasses and a gold chain cross body bag for a brunch date.

Jessica Alba looked sassy in a pair of faded distressed rolled up jeans with a matching denim top, white high heels, brown sunglasses and a black shoulder bag for an off duty look. Kourtney Kardashian showed off her pregnancy style in a denim acid wash shirt which she paired with ripped Frame denim le skinny de Jeanne and tan heels for a dinner date with her sister Kim. Ellie Goulding wore a double denim ensemble as she arrived in Dublin to play a secret gig. The singer wore a pair of light blue loose fit ripped boyfriend jeans with a matching denim shirt, a pair of sturdy black leather boots and a gold long chain.

Miranda Kerr ventured out in New York’s Midtown neighborhood in a double denim ensemble which she accessorised with a pair of Miu Miu leopard print calf hair mules and a black Hermes Birkin bag for a stylish denim & animal print ensemble. Cheyenne Tozzi  looked casual in the same shade of denim on denim ensemble which she finished it off with a pair of white trainers. Zendaya wore denim overalls with suspenders with a matching long-sleeved denim shirt, minty green Christian Louboutin pumps, red lipstick and a black back pack as she was promoting her new Disney movie Zapped.

Jennifer Lopez looked effortlessly chic while dropping off her children to school, wearing a Mother double foxy denim shirt, with matching skinny jeans with side zipper, tan sky high stilettos and aviator sunglasses for a chic school run look. Lindsay Price looked trendy in a double denim combo of three-quarter length cropped jeans,  navy vest top, denim shirt  brown fringed bag and a pair of beige heels for a stylish casual look. Kim Kardashian wore a Balmain denim shirt with a pair of pastel pink pumps and clingy jeans for effortless style.

Olivia Palermo attended an exclusive preview of the Marchesa Voyage for ShopStyle collection wearing a Topshop denim button down shirt with a fitted jean skirt with front slit, a black belt, black and tan Rebecca Minkoff handbag, a pair of nude Olivia Palermo X Aquazzura cut out sandals for a chic fashion week outfit. Lily Collins  looked relaxed in denim button down rolled up to the elbows shirt which she paired with a white top underneath it, a dark denim cut-off skirt, oversized cat-eye sunglasses, pale pink Prada handbag, flat T-strap sandals as she headed to the spa. Kim Kardashian was spotted wearing a Frame denim le high distressed stretch denim pencil skirt with a Balmain denim shirt, Celine sunglasses and nude Prada thin strap leather heels sandals for a day look. Pixie Lott attended The Guvnors UK premiere wearing a denim A-line mini skirt with a matching jacket which she paired with a white polo neck and flat brown ankle boots for a comfortable same shade of colour denim look.

Miley Cyrus gave a double denim look a twist with  loose jean cut-off shorts, with a matching heavy denim jacket, a black crop top, oversized black leather bag on her shoulder and a pair of black high top trainers/sneakers for a stylish 90s look. Alexa Chung was spotted strolling through the streets of Soho in a pair of denim hotpants whish she teamed with a pink camisole vest top, a denim shirt, retro sunglasses, strappy black sandals and a python print handbag.

Men’s double denim trend

Kings of Leon musician Caleb Followill looked edgy in grey pair of jeans which he wore with a faded denim jacket, black and white triangle shaped shirt and black shoes for a rock and roll look. Alex Pettyfer was spotted in West Hollywood in sky blue double denim ensemble. The actor wore a denim shirt with blue pair of jeans, sunglasses and classic converse trainers. Joel Edgerton enjoyed a bite to eat at eatery in Bondi Beach wearing knitted hat, glasses, navy denim jeans, dark denim jacket with a striped t-shirt underneath it and brown boots. Justin Bieber went full cowboy as he took Selena Gomez for a horseback ride in his native Canada in a navy blue denim shirt with a burgundy t-shirt underneath it, blue jeans, cowboy hat, dark brown shoes and sunglasses for a horse riding outfit.

Blake Harrison paired black denim jeans with a blue denim shirt to the premiere of the Inbetweeners 2. Ralph Lauren collection shows a model dresses in a denim suit, denim waistcoat, parsley tie, & striped shirt and brown shoes for a stylish double denim ensemble.
