How to make 3D Abstract Wall Art Diy Using Polystyrene

We have always had our eyes on Made.com Assembly by Tom Pigeon decorative 3D wall art sculpture so we decided to take up the challenge and made one using polystyrene which is a great way of reducing waste that goes to landfill. We do love making simple and easy diy wall art projects by recycling things around us.

What you’ll need:

  1. Cut your polystyrene sheets into a medium and large rectangle shapes using the craft knife. Mine were in pieces so I had to glue them together to form two long rectangle shapes.
  2. You’ll also need to cut out a round shape. Use anything round to trace out your round shape and cut it out.
  3. You’ll also need to cut out a thin strip, mine was about 9.5inches.
  4. In total you should have 4 pieces, 2x rectangle, 1x thin strip and 1x round shape.
  5. Paint all the cut out using the colour of your choice (I used acrylic paint) and if you decide to use spray paint make sure you use one that doesn’t react with polystyrene. I used gold paint for the thin strip, I mixed white and red to make a pink colour for the round shape, for the medium size rectangle shape I mixed white, blue and yellow acrylic paints to get aqua colour and for the large rectangle shape, I mixed blue, yellow, red and white to get a grey colour. You’ll need to paint the polystyrene pieces three coats to achieve the look that you want, otherwise you could use chalk paint with a bit of baking soda to create texture.
  6. Once all the pieces are dried, go ahead and stick them together using hot glue. Start with the large rectangle shape followed by the medium size rectangle, then the circle and the strip, watch the video for more instructions on how to glue the pieces together.
