Diesel has opted for androgynous & plus size models found on Tumblr for its latest ad campaign. Nicola Formichetti the brand’s artist director relied on word of mouth to cast the subjects of his first Diesel campaign: 20 people of all shapes and sizes who live in New York and work in artistic fields.
Nicola Formichetti told WWD that ‘I wanted to find people who reflected the diversity of the creative community today and not just the typical model,’ ‘I wanted the campaign to showcase a variety of characters, people who are beautiful in their own unique way,’ He added that ‘It was less about capturing fashion and more about getting an insight into these people’s souls’.
The campaign models include 22-year-old pink-haired graffiti artist, Michelle Calderon; Helen Primack, a 15-year-old student at the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts in New York, and Benjamin Ackermann, a 23-year-old photographer, musician and collage artist.
The ads, shot by photographers Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, will appear in the September issue of Vogue magazine.
