How to make an off the shoulder/Bardot ankara/kitenge top Diy 1

Off the shoulder tops have made their mark in the fashion world. This trend is not only versatile but a perfect excuse to show off your toned shoulder.

For this project/Diy you’ll need

Fabric of your choice (here we’re using ankara/kitenge/chitenge/African print), a pair of scissors, measuring tape, elastic, pins, chalk/pencil, sewing machine or a needle & thread.

  • Measure the size of your upper chest and the length of the top and note down the measurements.Fold the fabric in half and divide the upper chest measurements into half (because the fabric is folded) i.e. if your upper chest measurement is 32cm, measure 16cm on the folded fabric and the actual length of the top and use a pencil or chalk to mark on the fabric.

  • Cut out the measured length

  • Sew the sides of the fabric and hem the bottom of the bodice top. For the top of the bodice leave a gap on the hem for the elastic.Measure the size and the length of your arms and cut two small rectangle pieces of the fabric which will form the sleeves.

  • The bodice and the hand piece should look like this

  • Fold the hand fabric into two to get two rectangular pieces.

  • Cut out the two rectangular pieces

  • The sleeves and the bodice should now look like this.

  •  Sew the open sides and the bottom hem. For the top hem sew a few cm away from the folded edge, leaving a gap for inserting the elastic.

Insert the elastic with the help of a safety-pin to both the rectangular sleeves and the bodice. Sew the ends of the elastic together and close the loop.

Pin and sew the sleeves and the bodice together.
